There's no comparison between the demands of Jennifer Lawrence's American Hustle ditzy wife and Lupita Nyong'o's role as the tortured Patsey in 12 Years A Slave. Let's hope the Oscar voters agree!
Lupita Nyong'o Deserves To Win The Best Supporting Actress Oscar Over Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence is funny, warm and oddly sympathetic as Christian Bale's cheated-upon wife in American Hustle. There's no doubt that she brings her massive talent to the role of Rosalyn Rosenfeld, the cheesy, nosy wife of Christan's Irving Rosenfeld, in American Hustle.
In the hands of a lesser actress, Rosalyn would have been annoying, instead of strangely endearing. But honestly -- her character is a caricature, and like all caricatures, she's a hoot to play, and Lawrence clearly had a grand old time bringing Rosalyn to life.

But neither did she have to do the emotional stretch to convey the gut-wrenching life endured by a female slave in 1841 Louisiana. That was the task faced by newcomer Lupita Nyong'o who was overlooked for a Best Supporting Actress win at the Golden Globes.
Nyong'o was heartwrenching as Patsey, the best cotton-picker on the plantation of sadistic owner, Edwin Epps, played by Michael Fassbender. Her poignant vulnerability is perfectly conveyed by Nyong'o, as she becomes increasingly desperate after becoming the sexual obsession and rape victim of her owner.
No one can walk away after watching the terrorized Patsey without becoming fully imbued with the hopelessness and inhumanity of life as a slave. It's a life-shaking and changing experience.
