Lynn Shelton's LAGGIES premiered last night at Sundance and it felt like a Graduation, which is even more appropriate when you see the film.

I've always loved and admired Lynn Shelton. First of all, because her films are unique and effortless feeling. Second, she gets movies made, scraping them together for almost no money if she has to. Third, she is fiercely loyal and uses the same crew over and over.

Lynn Shelton is universally known to be one of the nicest human beings around. She grows as a filmmaker with every film and there is not much more that you can ask of an artist. I mean, that's the goal, right?

In her introduction last night, she credited the Sundance Film Festival with her career, saying that (I'm paraphrasing here): they showed her small Indies that she had scraped together for pennies and always believed in her. They've now showed four of her films. People often scratch their heads about how to help advance the position of women in this industry, but one answer seems abundantly clear: give the Lynn Shelton's of the world an opportunity to show their work and grow.

LAGGIES stars Keira Knightley and Chloe Moretz. Without giving too much away, since I hate when articles do that, I'll say that it's about being stuck in the past after high school and temporarily kidding yourself that you can run off, be inappropriate and do it all over again. It's a female-driven film that's funny, Indie and smart. The writing is sharp and original and Andrea Seigel (the screenwriter) got a nearly forty second applause at the end, which she later confessed to being embarrassed about - a humble talent to keep an eye on.

Having gone through the Feature Film Labs, I know that the Sundance Institute, Keri Putnam, Michelle Satter, John Cooper and everyone at Sundance make a point to support women. i love that about them. In my coverage this week, I will be profiling some amazing women who are here at this festival with their work so stay tuned.
